Ash Wednesday at Home

Feb 16, 2021

Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent. Although Ash Wednesday tends to be a more somber day in the church calendar, it is a great opportunity to involve children in the practices of the church. Ash Wednesday is full of symbolism and is both experiential and formative.

Why celebrate Ash Wednesday?

  1. It serves as a reminder of our dependence on God and God’s grace
  2. It sets us on a journey of refreshing and renewing our relationship with God during Lent
  3. Rituals are important for marking time and reminding us of God’s goodness
  4. Things we can touch, see, and smell (like ashes) are experiential reminders of what God has done for us through Jesus
  5. Confession and repentance are important practices in the Christian faith

If you are looking for a way to celebrate Ash Wednesday at home, this resource is for you. You can do this on your own, or with children. It includes words to say to children, to help them understand what you are doing together and instructions for making ashes.
